Peeing Dog draws on childhood memories of a dog who was often scolded for urinating on the lawn because of the common belief that female dogs’ urine damages grass. In the sculpture, however, she lifts one leg like a male dog, almost as if deliberately repeating the very act that once got her into trouble. The wounds on her body recall that punishment, while the human features in her face bring the dog’s experience closer to a human one. By giving a female dog a posture typically associated with males, the sculpture turns the very reason for her punishment into something absurd. She may not be able to escape the rules imposed on her, but she can still bend them, challenge them, and turn a once-forbidden act into a small gesture of defiance.
