BIO

Ji Su Kwak is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, drawing, and installation. Her practice investigates how media images represent and circulate collective tragedy, and how the emotions and sense of distance they provoke can be explored through material form. Starting from press photographs, archival footage, and witness accounts, she reconstructs fragments of events using everyday materials such as paper, wire, straw, and fabric. In the process, scenes of tragedy are materialized as fragile, small-scale, and unstable forms, revealing themselves to the viewer in paradoxical ways.

Her work reanimates the absences and omissions in flattened images by translating them into sculptural presence, or renders exaggerated emotional cues in restrained physical gestures. Viewers navigate these open, spatial arrangements and are invited to contemplate tragedies they have not personally experienced, while gradually becoming aware of their own positionality within the scene. Through lightweight materials, vulnerable and shifting forms, and subtle, inarticulable emotions, Kwak constructs sculptural expressions of tragedy that resist reduction to a single narrative.

곽지수는 조각, 드로잉, 설치를 기반으로 활동하는 시각예술가로 미디어 이미지가 공동체적 비극을 어떻게 재현하고 소비하는지를 관찰하고, 그 과정에서 파생되는 감정과 거리감의 문제를 물질로 탐구한다. 보도사진, 사건 기록 영상, 관련인 증언 등을 출발점으로 삼아 종이, 철사, 지푸라기, 천과 같은 일상적인 재료를 조합해 사건의 한 장면을 조각적으로 재구성한다. 이 과정에서 비극의 장면은 연약하고 작으며 불안정한 형태로 물질화되어 관객에게 역설적인 방식으로 드러난다.

그의 작업은 평면 이미지에서 제거된 정보의 공백을 입체적으로 다시 채워 넣거나 지나치게 연출된 장면의 감정을 절제된 형태로 옮겨 놓는 방식으로 구성된다. 관객은 이러한 구조 사이를 움직이며 직접 경험하지 않은 비극을 사유하고, 그 안에서 자신의 위치를 조용히 자각하게 된다. 곽지수는 가벼운 물질, 연약하고 고정되지 않은 형태, 말로 설명하기 어려운 미묘한 감정을 통해 단순한 서사로 환원할 수 없는 비극의 형태를 탐구한다.
